Otter Tail Power Company selected the University of Minnesota, Crookston, from among four Minnesota colleges with student residence halls within its service area. The goal of the Campus Energy Challenge is to reduce energy consumption on campus by as much as 15 percent. In 2009, UMC’s students, staff, and faculty worked with Otter Tail Power Company employees to analyze current electric energy consumption and develop strategies for reducing their use. Most implementation will occur in 2010. Savings will be monitored for five years. During this process, we also expect to develop energy-efficiency habits that will help everyone on campus save money on their energy bills and model those habits to the Crookston community, other campuses, and the country.

"Through the Campus Energy Challenge, the University of Minnesota, Crookston, will work with Otter Tail Power Company to reduce its electric energy consumption by as much as 10 to15 percent. That's an extremely aggressive goal, but we envision student leadership grabbing hold and making it work." — Jon Fabre, Campus Energy Challenge Project Manager, Otter Tail Power Company

"At the University of Minneosta, Crookston, our goal is to offer an environment that is conducive--both physically and intellectually--to creating a sound teaching and learning experience. Evergreen Hall does that on many levels. Now we look forward to working with Otter Tail Power Company, who selected us to be its first-ever Campus Energy Challenge participant, to learn even more about saving energy and passing on that knowledge to create a more sustainable future." — University of Minnesota, Crookston, Chancellor Charles H. Casey

"To our knowledge, nothing like this ever has been done to this magnitude. This project is our unique way to encourage greater understanding that the choices people make about their energy lifestyles have a global impact." — Cris Kling, Director, Public Relations, Otter Tail Power Company
