About the challenge
All of the residents of Rothsay, Minnesota, are working together to reduce the energy use of their entire town, every business and every home. And all of the students in the community are playing a leadership role to accomplish that goal. That's the Community Energy Challenge. It's a unique way to encourage greater understanding that the choices people make about their energy lifestyles have a global impact.
Goals
- Reduce the entire community's energy use by 10 percent to15 percent by 2015.
- Help Otter Tail Power Company’s Rothsay customers save money on their energy bills through sustainable behavioral changes.
- Model next-century energy habits for family, neighbors, the state, the country, and the world.

- Free home energy monitors and a variety of free energy-saving products.
- Free energy audits.
- Rebates, grants, and low 1.9 percent interest financing for qualifying weatherization and energy-saving measures.
- Home Energy Makeover with an estimated value of $12,000.
